In her piece O Sabbe Dharmakāya, Mia Hsieh uses music, drama and dance to create a powerful multi-dimensional experience. It is a rare director who can weave together feelings and stories across mediums in this way. However the result is a tapestry of surprising power and beauty. The theme Mia has chosen, the forced immigration of some 1,000,000 people from China to Taiwan in the 1950’s, is an extremely challenging one. However by drawing closely from stories from her own family and those who have had a similar experience she conveys the experience of heart rending separation with great power, art and poignancy.

Mia is a second generation mainland Chinese born and raised in Taiwan. The notion of where is her true homeland used to baffle her. It was not until she discovered her father's 100,000 word diary that her parent’s painful story of being uprooted and separated from loved ones during the war were revealed to her. Living in modern Taiwan, it’s hard to believe that such painful stories truly had taken place only one generation earlier. Mia’s hunger for this unknown truth propelled her to collect all the broken and lost pieces from that troubled time. She that realized no matter how politicians in Taiwan tried to divide people into various opposing groups, all groups had been equally affected by the cruelty of war. Wounds were created everywhere in the process of coming together and tearing apart, on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Mia shares that one day she read the following sentence from her spiritual teacher, "Suffering is everywhere, and true love comes from accepting this.” Tears began to trickle down her cheek. In 2007, Mia directed a theater piece based on the stories of her grandfather and her mother. It was warmly received by young as well as older audience members. This made her realize the importance of filling the gap in the minds of Taiwan’s younger generation for a part of Taiwan’s history, though painful, cannot afford to be ignored.

"O Sabbe Dharmakāya" begins by looking at the stories of Mia’s family and that generation, and widens its scope to the universal theme of yearning for love and safe connection. Mia collaborates with dancers and actors (Pei-Chun Wang, Limei Chong, Ming-Chu Yu, Shu-Jin Chang, Boting Chen), and features live vocal music from Mia and cello by Hui-Chun Lin who studied improvisation performance in Germany and toured though out Europe. Mia was featured on The Discovery Channel and is the vocalist of the internationally recognized
A Moving Sound music ensemble performing in many respected festival. We invite you to this rare experience of dance, music and stories to guide through an emotional journey from Taiwan’s history that you will never forget.

”Dharmakāya” is a central concept in Mahayana Buddhism. It describes the truth body which exists even though the physical body ends. “O Sabbe” means everywhere.
